Getting started:
1. Enable your ask box and submit box. Now a lot of people tend to forget this step when they first start, and they often remember it when people start mentioning it to them. It’d be a little late by then.
2. Deciding on a blog style. Your blog style may change as time goes on for sure, it might boring to reblog the same thing for a long time for some people. But when you first start, it is always good to have an idea of what you are looking for, so you don’t end up reblogging totally different things, because it may confuse your visitors. They may like some of your posts, but not the rest.
3. Finding a theme: When you first start, you wouldn’t want a theme too fancy. But of course that depends on your blog style, and your personal taste. What I suggest is try find a simple theme, but unique in its own way at the same time. Personally I tend to like themes where they can reblog and find stuff straight away, because I'm lazy and plus it is much easier than clicking everywhere to reblog something.
4. Choosing a background. Backgrounds can take a large role in every blog believe it or not. When you visit someone’s blog. Most times you want to see their posts and style then decide if you should follow. Now if your background too fancy, it will distract your audience, and in some extreme cases, may make your blog look disorganized and crowded. I suggest to use a simple background, it does not always have to be black or white, it can be a gif, but just keep in mind that your posts should get the main attention.
5. Reblog, be active. I use q+, it's a great way to manage and actively queue your posts. People may think ‘Well of course we will reblog, that’s the main purpose’ But when I say reblog, I mean reblog a lot, as much as you can. Even if you don’t have many followers. You don't want people visiting your blog, scrolling down and find out you on have 30 posts. When you first start I would suggest to have at least 100+ posts before you go onto the next stage.
Attention:
1. Be polite, ask people questions. Be as creative as possible. Believe it or not, no matter how Tumblr famous the person are, they are still always wanting people to ask them questions. This is the first step of getting someone’s attention, because at least now, they might remember you as 'Hey that’s the person who asked an interesting question.’
2. Reblog people’s 'face’ off their Tumblr. This may not sound like a big deal, but trust me, it is always more exciting to see someone reblogged YOUR photo instead just another follower reblogging one of the posts you reblogged.
3. Reply to people’s questions. If someone says 'Do you guys like my new banner’ check out their banner and answer them. When they ask questions, obviously they want answers. This helps giving them a better impression of you. By this point, some may remember you.
4. Participate in their promotion games and etc. It does not matter if you don’t win, participate so they know that you are interested. That always gives people nice feelings towards you.
5. Ask them to check out your blog. Make sure you read their FAQ first. That’s a must. Because some people get tons of the same questions daily and they may mention that they will not answer this type of question in their FAQ. You do not want to annoy them. In most cases, be polite, compliment their blog first then ask them to check out your blog. They may follow you, or they may not. Depends on the situation. If they do, ask them to do promotion games with you. But congratulations! You have successfully received someone’s attention.
Followers:
1. Talk to your followers. Once you are starting to get some amounts of followers, it doesn't matter how little or how massive that number is. Always try talk to your followers. Do not wait for them to talk to you. Talk to them! Check out their blogs and maybe message them if you have time, ask them things, simple questions like 'Hey how was your day?’ Can bring yourself good impressions.
2. Do your own promotion games. I highly recommend you start doing this when you have around 1000-1500 followers. You may not get many replies at first, but once your followers are used to you doing those games, they will participate more. Don’t give up if you didn’t get a good amount of replies, try again 10 minutes later. Try come up with fun and different ways of promoting that is. You don't really want to do 'First _ to reblog’ all the time. Try others! Everyone likes fresh stuff.
3. Join networks. This is a big step! Once you joined a network, you have to participate in group promotions and a lot of other stuff. It is a big commitment but trust me, it will be worth it. In networks, you meet a lot of people and let’s hope you guys all get along. Joining networks can boost up your followers count fast, depends on the network. So this is definitely a good step to take once you have 2000-3000 followers.
Blog check:
1. Always keep your blog looking nice and neat. Now that you have a decent amount of followers you will have to post a lot of text posts. I suggest not to keep the text posts on your blog for too long. I would delete my text posts after 10-20 minutes. But that depends on your blog style, if you are a text post blog, then go for it! Ignore this step. But others, you wouldn’t want random pieces of small writing everywhere on your blog, that may confuse the new visitors.
2. Positive attitude.
3. Always always, be polite.
